Wear your baby in summer!
Summer is nearly upon us and we have been getting lots of enquiries about what is cool for summer babywearing and what pretty summer colours are available.
So, what’s cool for summer babywearing?
Nothing changes the fact that when you’re essentially hugging someone in the middle of summer you will feel a little warm, and likely sweat a bit. Hopefully one day someone invents a carrier with a built in air conditioning system, that’s light weight too of course!
Buckle carriers can be cool for summer as there can be a ‘through breeze’ as such, as the carrier doesn’t fully wrap around you and baby like a woven or stretchy wrap does. The Lillebaby airflow is a particularly good summer babywearing choice as the panel covering baby is mesh. Very breatheable and airy for bub.
Ring Slings are a nice option too if you find these comfy as there is only one layer of fabric over bub and the least amount of body contact between parent and bub/child. Hugabub does an awesome ring sling made from organic cotton mesh. Very summery. Not safety tested for use in the water (doh I know), but perfect for being outside in the summer sun. Little Frog has some pretty summery colours in their ring slings too. The sunny echo is as summery as you can get in my opinion. Gorgeous bright yellow!
Even though there’s not the meshy option in the Ellevill woven wraps, I still cant do without wrapping for the whole of summer. The 100% cotton Zaras really are airy and light, as well as being durable. Winning all round! Pop bub in a kangaroo carry or your little toddler in a ruck and you are ready to brave the heat waves. Again some gorgeous summery colours. Pretty pinks (tri-sugar), fresh green, summer sun, and fun orange (curry).
All these options are suitable for newborns, older babies and toddlers. If you are particularly keen on using a stretchy wrap with your new bubba (they are exceptionally easy, comfy and snug) then the Hugabub light weight option would be a nice choice. Slightly lighter fabric and a little more airy for the warmer months.
Hot summer days can mean dehydration and over-heating for littlies if we don’t take care. It’s important to remember to keep your baby visible so you can keep an eye on them. Parents in much hotter regions than ours wear their babies through summer so its not unsafe to wear your baby in the heat, but it is important to make sure they are dressed lightly (consider the wrap or carrier as one item of clothing or one layer) and well hydrated – lots of offering breastmilk for breastfed babies or other fluids (as directed by your health care provider) for the little bubbas and plenty of fresh plain water for older babies, toddlers and babywearers. A parents body temperature will help regulate baby’s temperature so skin-to-skin might be your choice for a new baby. However if you prefer to avoid the sweat, a thin piece of muslin or light fabric to avoid the stickiness between you and bub might help.
Cover up or cream it up. If you are going to be in the sun, cover arms and legs with cool light-weight clothes made from natural fabrics and a broad brim hat, sun cream (we recommend something natural like wotnot sunscreen) or have a parasol or umbrella to keep you and bubba from getting burnt.
Happy Summer Babywearing !
